Oregon Rail Heritage Center

The Oregon Rail Heritage Center is a must-visit destination for train enthusiasts and history buffs visiting Portland. Located in the heart of the city, this museum is dedicated to preserving the rich history of rail transportation in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

The center is home to three historic steam locomotives, including the Southern Pacific 4449. This locomotive, built in 1941, is one of the most famous and well-preserved steam engines in the world. It was used to haul passenger trains between Portland and California before being retired in 1957. Thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers, it has been restored to its former glory.

In addition to the Southern Pacific 4449, the center also houses the Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700 and the Oregon Railroad & Navigation Co. 197. Both of these locomotives were built in the early 20th century and played crucial roles in the development of the Pacific Northwest.

Aside from the locomotives, the center also showcases a collection of historic rail cars and other artifacts. Visitors can see vintage dining cars, sleeping cars, and even a caboose. The museum also features a collection of historic photographs and documents, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.

One of the center’s highlights is the working turntable, which is used to move the locomotives in and out of the museum. Visitors can witness the massive engines being turned around on the turntable, providing a unique and exciting experience.

The Oregon Rail Heritage Center also boasts a gift shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs and gifts related to rail transportation and the Pacific Northwest. The shop offers a wide selection of books, DVDs, and other items that are perfect for train enthusiasts of all ages.

The center is open to the public on weekends and holidays, and admission is free. Donations are welcome and help support the ongoing preservation and maintenance of the locomotives and other artifacts.
